The specific climatic and geological conditions of the Serra de Monchique, allows for a wide range of flora and fauna to prosper here. The biodiversity found here, is such that the ecosystem of the Serra has been identified as one of the Natural forest ‘Hot Spots’ of Europe, with bird species such as Bonelli’s eagle (Hieraaetus fasciatus), The Short-toed Eagle (Circaetus gallicus), The Eurasian Eagle-owl (Bubo bubo), The Thekla Lark (Galerida theklae), The Scrub warbler (Toutinegra-do-mato), Common Whitethroat (Sílvia communis), and the Green Woodpecker (Picus viridis) amongst many others.
